Can anyone here comment on the process of how brokers obtain listings in Manhattan?

I'm licensed as a RE Salesperson in New York, but don't work as a broker. Looking to move out of my current apartment, but for me, paying a broker fee is extremely cost prohibitive and unnecessary since I a) know how to contact most building owners directly and b) don't need their help to get through the paperwork.

Other than showing me listings that I might not have found on my own, I don't really see why I should pay a broker, considering I've had bad experiences with some of them in the past.

Ideally, would be awesome to be able to go around the broker to the landlord directly. Who has done this before in buildings that aren't luxury and have more obscure management companies?

In the first sentence you inquire about how real estate brokers obtain listings and then in the next paragraph you say you work in real estate and know all about how to contact building owners directly.Doesn't make much sense .

If you know how to contact building owners directly then do so and see if they have apartments available.

A lot of landlords don't want to deal with anyone directly which is why they pay a broker's fee and there are tons of apartments that are no fee anyway.In all the years I was a renter I don't think I ever paid a rental fee.I usually dealt with supers,landlords directly or management companies .

Most NYC apartment buildings have a sign on them with info about how to contact the owner,the super or the management company.

My first thought would become a member of the Manhattan board of Realtors to have access to MLS

Maybe I'm missing something, but the question makes no sense to me. If you've lived in NYC any time at all, you would have found that you don't need brokers, and that the MLS doesn't have the stranglehold here that it does in other cities. I found a handful of rentals and later my co-op without ever using a broker. For that matter, these days management companies don't usually enter into it, either. The only exception I can think of would be if you were looking at the ultra-expensive homes of the 1% ... but in that case, I doubt you'd be posting here.
