a landlord can start to proceed to court if the tenant falls behind in rent. the tenant can be evicted for non payment of rent. however as far as the landlord actually seeing what is owed, that may be more complicated
The building I live in was sold to another landlord. The previous landlord says I owe him money almost 2 years after he sold the building. Can I be evicted or can he just try and sue me?

Yes you can as the new LL inherits the debt from the old LL. How many months of rent do you owe?

Are you currently living in the building?
Do you owe rent from 2 years ago?
Is the current owner the one contacting you regarding past rent that is due (allegedly)?
I'm sure there is a vast difference in what can be done legally if the previous owner is the one contacting you regarding past due rents and not the current owner.
It may be best to set up a consultation with an attorney who specializes in this type of issue.
If your rent is current with the new LL, that is all that matters. Your old LL can go to city court to collect the past due rent along with interest and costs (if you indeed owe back rent) but you don't have to fear the city marshall putting your stuff on the curb.
In NYS, if a corporation ( and let's assume that the LL has incorporated or is an LLC) sues an individual in city court they must be represented by a lawyer. The individual can defend himself (or herself).
Why not just send him/her copies of all your receipts or cancelled checks for rent paid?
