I turn 50 yrs old this September (2014) and would like to travel from Toronto, Canada to NY city to watch the Yankees vs. the Red Sox on my birthday. I was also thinking of catching the NY Jets season opener against the Oakland Raiders on the 7th. I will be travelling alone, and would like some advice. Will it be wiser to stay in Manhattan or stay in East Rutherford, close to the football game? Is it relatively easy to transit from NJ to Manhattan? Or would I be wiser staying in Manhattan and travelling to NJ? What airport should I use? As far as money is concerned, in order to maximize my vacation, of course cheaper would be better. I can't afford three hundred dollars a night for accommodations, so that's why I thought I might stay in NJ and transit over to NY. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanking you in advance

EBCarr

Personally..I would say to stay in Manhattan. Why travel all the way to NYC to stay in Jersey??? ANd there are so many hotels in Manhattan I'm sure you could find an affordable one. As far as travel...Yankee stadium is in the Bronx...staying in NY is ideal. As far as the Meadowlands arena (old name...lol) in Jersey...just take a bus from the Port of Authority in Times Square. It's right outside the Lincoln tunnel.

And if you really want to go cheapo..you can get a hotel in Queens by one of the airports. But hell...live a little and stay in Manhattan!!!

HOWEVER....are you driving here or flying???? Because if you have a car I would say to get a hotel in Queens where the hotels have FREE parking lots.

I suggest staying in Long Island City, Queens which is just across the East River from Midtown Manhattan and has 24/7 subway access to the rest of NYC.

If you stay in East Rutherford, you will need a car to get around.

Stay in Manhattan. Its easy to get to the Giants stadium from the city. Im sure most of your sightseeing and activities will be in NYC, not NJ, so it makes more sense to stay there.

As for hotel prices, you can always get good deals online. Check out TravelZoo or Hotwire for good deals on NYC hotels.
