13 shot in 9 bloody hours in NYC

"At least 13 people were shot in nine bloody hours in the city over the weekend — including two teens participating in a memorial walk for a friend killed by a stray bullet, police said."

"The weekend gunfire spree, which occurred between 5 p.m. Saturday and 2 a.m. Sunday, mostly occurred in Brooklyn. One incident took place in Harlem and another in The Bronx."

(Of the East New York ones: '“This is normal for this neighborhood, happens every summer,” Sammy Ali, who works at nearby Lucky Deli, said of the violence.')

Personally I think crime always gets worse in the summertime in NYC. The recent crimes in the news doesn't phase me. When violent robberies go up, then I'll get worried.
It's a fact, crime always gets worse in the summer in NYC. I doubt violent robberies outside bad neighborhoods will go up.

Time will tell if the "management" of crime statistics will permit a reported increase in robberies. Despite the changes in top management at the NYPD, there are still Compstat meetings. Until precinct commanders are no longer almost held personally accountable for crimes, they will be loath to allow the actual numbers to climb.

If overall violent crime is once again down, and we're at historic lows then that's it end of story. Again if NYC only had 5 murders for the year you would still see the same idiots with the same politically motivated doomsday complaints and predictions lol

Murders and death bodies have to be reported. Those crimes are increasing. Cops can downgrade various categories of theft and under certain circumstances report stolen things as lost. But some things can't be manipulated.

Even under Bloomberg, in the last couple of years he admitted robberies were up (theft of electronics).

In his last two years Bloomberg said theft was up. Crime in NYC or any big cities rises and falls from time to time, and on a seasonable basis each year as soon as it gets warm.

Yep I agree. But lets also keep the crime stats in its proper perspective and remember we're talking about a city that has experienced between roughly a 70 to 90% drop in all serious crime categories (name another major city that can boast that??) from its high points in the early 90's so at some point you're going to "bottom out" so to speak and have minor up and down fluctuations as you're referring to. But if you went by some people in this forum you would swear NYC was on the brink of a crime wave of epic proportions which is just ridiculous.

It never hurts to take any spike in crime seriously. No matter how minimal and short lived it may be. Doesn't matter who the mayor is, or what the temperature outside is, or if the criminals and victims are black or white. It always makes sense to speak up against crime no matter how low the crime rate is vs historical standards. One innocent kid being killed is one too many. Never is there a reason to stay quiet on this topic, even if it irritates you or gives you the belief that it is a personal attack on you. Its not.

Well, so far murders are down from 2013 (106 from 122). We can credit the cold weather. Time will tell, over the next few months.

True. Any elected politicians worth their salt, as well as any police department worth it's salt, would have to address ANY spike in crime or else there will be political and economic consequences.

The real estate in NYC needs newcomers and tourists to feel safe or else less people with money come, and prices go down. No mayor or city council wants to be blamed for NYC going down under their watch.

Thus politicians will take this spike extremely seriously, as they should. No one wants an apologist for a politician.
