My daughters are staying in a youth hostel in Chelsea for several days, part of their itinerary includes a trip to Coney Island, what would be the best way to get there using public transit and how long does it take?
Also what are some of the more must do activities for Coney Island?
Thanks.

Take the subway. One can use the MTA website to plan one's trip:
MTA NYCT - Trip Planner+

The must-do activities are walk along the boardwalk, visit the NY Aquarium, visit the Coney Island Luna Park, stop at the Original Nathan's Famous Frankfurters and enjoy the beach!

The D is usually the fastest train to Coney Island, though the N beats it sometimes. The D is probably marginally closer to where they're staying. As for time, about an hour and a half. Coney Island is far. (It's at the end of the line for four trains, the D, F, N and Q; they shouldn't take the F or Q, though, as those run local and are thus much slower.)

Coney Island has the NY Aquarium, Luna Park (a medium-sized amusement park), the beach and the boardwalk with its weird and tacky shops, and the Brooklyn Cyclones (minor league baseball).

(Personally, I don't think Coney Island is worth the long trek for someone only in NYC for a few days/a week, but I know others, including many tourists, who disagree.)

Agree with Brownstone. Coney Island can be very underwhelming/depressing. It's not what it used to be but if you must go the D or N trains are best bets.
