they feel that he could have been caught faster if the implementation of cameras were involved. I feel all people will do is spray paint, or break them, so it serves no purpose. if anything, if they wanna cut down crime in NYCHA, send more manpower in. call the feds.
You can have both hidden and visible cameras. Those who vandalize the cameras have committed felonies and can be barred from public housing permanently!
I'm not sure if it's possible in NYC but I was reading about a small town in Texas that installed a very powerful camera on their water tower. The cops can look at it via computer. While it's expensive, in a high crime area maybe it would be worth the cost ($4500), if there would be a good place to mount it. It has a 30-times optic zoom that allows cops to zoom in on details like car plate numbers.
Did you happen to read that article reference the Pew study "Maxing Out" prison sentences? It looked at states and percentage of inmate that maxed out their sentences. Florida won that prize with 64.3%, the average was 21.5%, New York came in with only 11.1%. The revolving door of crime. Personally, I don't think the violent criminals should be getting a slap on the wrist for weapons possession and worse, but they often seem to only serve a short time.
One thing that bugs me is that even apparently severe sentences often end up being little more than a slap on the wrist. Someone will get a sentence of ten years and then have all but five suspended and then get out after two or three for good behaviour, etc. Even a so-called life sentence often ends up being just a few years. If someone commits a violent crime and is an obvious threat to the community he should be given a long sentence and made to serve every day of it. It baffles me as to how some of these judges and parole boards reach their decisions.
Why are cameras in the projects getting so much attention? It sounds like the murderer was a nutcase who wasn't rational enough that realizing he'd probably get caught would stop him. If he was worried about getting caught, he wouldn't have left a knife at the scene. All cameras can do is make it easier to find the perpetrator. And they caught him [assuming they got the right guy] anyway.
Exactly, instead of the focus being put squarely on the mental illness CRISES this country (root causes and solutions) is facing the Big Brother agenda is once again being pushed non-stop. There's NOTHING all the cameras and all the police force in the universe can do to stop a mentally disturbed individual from potentially going on a violent rage. But the idiot crowd who can't see the obvious will gladly give up all their personal freedoms in exchange for so-called "safety"... how weak, pathetic and mindless many in this society of become.
While the "cowards" are screaming for more Big Brother others are looking at Big Pharma as one of the prime culprits:
People, or their families around them, could educate themselves and therefore make smarter decisions about care while also taking responsibility for their own family members - or for themselves.
None of the drug discussions are a secret. All of the information is right there for anyone who bothers.
Just for the record - there's several projects in that area. I've not been to Boulevard Houses, but other projects around there and it's pretty hood over there. Been in them during the day and late at night.

You know, once upon a time they simply gave people like this stabber the death penalty and that was that. There's already weeping and wailing going on the de Blasio front. De Blasio's election was suppose to end the NYPD. Clearly that's not going to happen. Personally, I like his reforms and I like that he is standing firm on crime.
But if you're a law abiding citizen you should not fear cameras in the housing projects (when all privately owned apartment buildings and office buildings have monitoring systems in place).
Somebody in the New York criminal justice system--judges, parole board, etc.--needs to explain why this guy, with his record of violence, was let back out on the streets. Why wasn't he doing twenty years (at least)? I see this kind of thing almost every day reading the papers and watching the news. The criminal justice system in this country is simply broken.
Three hot meals a day, basket ball, tv, exercise equipment, showers, temprature controlled jail cells, clothing, building maintenance, staff salary, real estate taxes and whatnot, ALL costs money. Yes, that's tax payers money. And this money is not always sufficient, so they think in terms of cost in dollars - "If we keep him in jail, THIS much dollars in expense. If we release him, ZERO dollars".
Now imagine this guy is sent to jail for 20 odd years, the mother of that innocent dead child will pay taxes to feed this guy in jail.
Now imagine a .45-.60 cent .45ACP bullet traveling through his mostly worthless grey matter, saving society hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of dollars in mere fractions of a second. Wouldn't that be nice?
