Actually I dont get offended as both groups are very culturally similar. I have a lot of love for Dominicans. It just gets irksome lol. I grew up around lots of Dominicans and West Africans and I blend in very well with both groups.
People just randomly assume every black or Afro-Latino is Dominican and seems to be completely shocked when dark skinned Puerto Ricans say they're Puerto Rican and not Dominican. This happens all the time lol
Sounds like you grew up around the southwest Bronx?
Does the actual city of NY still have a large PR community? I hear that East Harlem which was known as their enclave is losing its PR people and more latinos from central and south america are coming in. I know the DR community has Washington Heights, and many parts of the South Bronx. I have not heard of any PR nabes in the outer boros. I do know there are PR communities out in NJ, and Conn, and Philly.
Back in 2010, the city was about 8.6% Puerto Rican if I recall correctly. So that means there's a little under 800,000 PR living in the city.
You have to consider that Puerto Ricans who used to live in areas like East Harlem or the LES didn't necessarily leave the city. A lot of them moved out to areas like Staten Island. (Plus, there still is a sizable PR population in those neighborhoods. It's just that it might be 30-40% instead of 50-60% like it was back in the day)

I have never seen a Puerto Rican trying to act Italian/Sicilian and I live in southern Brooklyn. Idk but then again you have witnessed this so I can't argue or disagree. But you are spot on about the mixing. I know plenty of Italian/PR families in Brooklyn.
There's a community of Puerto Ricans in Chicago, Cleveland and Buffalo too.
