You could probably find a small studio apt. in the Jackson Heights area for $1000 a month or even you are lucky in the Rego Park area. Both Jackson Heights and Rego Park are in Queens.
Thanks, everyone. The advice seems to confirm what I mostly already knew, unfortunately, but was hoping I could work around. A roommate would be ideal clearly, though none of my friends are available for that right now (the one who would want to move has taken long finishing school, and doesn't have an income yet). I'll take some of those tips about learning what my budget would need to be like--thanks.
If I were interested, what's the best/safest way to go about finding potential roommates looking for similar housing?
Edit for recent comments: So there are apartments out there around that price, but I guess it's not advisable living in them with my budget. That's another thing--you see dozens of listings on sites like Zillow when you sort by what you need, but it's a bit overwhelming to know what's a good deal or a good street(s) just from a map or listing. How do you sift through the bad or irrelevant deals?
