I was heading to the Dominican Republic 2 weeks ago for vacation my flight was at 5:45am and I got to the airport at 4:30am. At exactly 4:41 I was speaking with one of the workers there to check in when she told me it's too late for me to check in.

I was so pissed, I wanted to argue and fight it but she threatened to call security when I didn't even raise my voice. Pathetic!

I ended up paying $100 for another flight 5 hours later.

I tried googling it as soon as I got here to see if there was something I could do. I wanted to call American Express and tell them the merchant (jetblue) didn't sell me their services accordingly but I don't think that'll work.

I don't even wanna call Jet Blue because I know they won't do anything.

Anybody experience something like this?

Maybe it was overbooked. You weren't there, so you "volunteered" to take a later flight. As long as you got through security before they close the door, you should be able to get on.

That is ridiculous. The most stringent requirement I've seen is Spirit Airlines which is 45 minutes before the flight. I've never flown JetBlue, but is it possible to check in via the Internet? I will not start my journey to the airport if I do not have seats. (Even if I have to call)

I would call JetBlue and try to get the $100 refunded.

That being said, one of the reasons it is beneficial to be part of a frequent flier program is that you will get "slack" when there are contretemps.

Yeah not much "volunteering", didn't have another choice. Last time I use Jet Blue. And I will tell everyone I know about my horrific event so they won't use them either.

It is best to arrive 2 and a half hours before any international flight on most carriers I know of. Sorry you had to miss a flight but it's always best to arrive earlier rather then later for security, check in etc.

Did you see how early the flight was? Not so easy to get anywhere at 2-3AM. Not to mention you don't want to fall asleep before your flight leaves.

I'm done with early morning flights. They are a false economy.

Also, you can check in on the web. I think the OPs problem is that he didn't check in till he got there, and got there a little late. He didn't get a seat assigned, so when he tried, there were none left.

Now, they should have admitted this, moved him free to another flight, and comped him something for the bump. However, since he didn't check in, they blamed him, and he got screwed.

Of course Jet Blue will do something! All you have to do is write a really good letter, and send a copy to the right places. In my opinion, you should not only get your $100 refunded, but ideally a little something extra as well. It would be great if you had the name of the staffer who threatened you, but you probably don't.

That seems odd, though. I'm sure I've checked in with less than an hour with other airlines.

I'm sorry I don't travel much so I didn't know about the online check in and whatnot. I do remember however paying an extra $35 for the "More legroom" seats, so I think the seats were assigned to me as soon as I bought the tickets. Or is that not how it works?

It can be, but not necessarily. A lot depends when you book and how full the flight is at the time you book, they may or may not allow you to assign seats at that point. But you can check in online as long at 24 hours ahead of time. All airlines overbook to some extent, because there are usually no-shows. But sometimes they don't balance out, and they have to bump someone. If you're not checking in by a certain time, they consider you a no-show, which is apparently what happened to you.
