My fridge works great during the winter but struggles during the summer months. I have a cheap thermometer which says 59 in the fridge but that can't be right or can it ?
I don't know if its time for a new fridge or will the super tell me I should put AC on in my apartment. I can't afford to use AC except at night.
Your refrigerator should work fine regardless of how hot the apartment is. If it is very hot the refrigerator will just kick on more often to maintain the 40 to 45 degrees. If that 59 degrees is true you need a new box not air conditioning.
Service guy came up today with a pro temp reader. Around 52/53. Seltzer is cold as well as the grapes just not AS cold as the winter time. Metal Grates are very cold to the touch.
I've always noticed my fridge was a little less cool during the hot summer. Right outside the refrigerator door is hot humid weather...very different then when my apartment is cool in the winter.
The super might look at it on monday but the service guy said it seems fine to him.
Food over 50 degrees for an expended period of time is dangerous. You want 40F or lower.
Cheap possibilities are a bad thermostat, filthy coils, or a shot gasket. (Can we presume your compressor runs continuously? Can this fridge even MAKE an ice cube?)
If that fridge is over 15 years old, toss it out...especially if you pay the electric bill. Newer fridges are well insulated and take half the power so it is even justifiable to toss a perfectly performing old fridge. The energy savings pays for the new fridge in very little time.
PS...if you are rent stabilized, DON'T let your landlord buy you a new one unless you are planning on moving soon. Have him give you a used one (no capital rent increase) or buy your own, it will be cheaper in the long run.
AC has nothing to do with your refrigerator.

Tomorrow I will start the dialogue with my super. I was hoping that could be avoided. He isn't the most pleasant person to deal with and I have a refrigerated medicine that would need to be stored somewhere while they change units.....it stresses me out just thinking about it.
However YES it seems like my fridge is on the fritz.
You could get a used cube fridge to store the meds for the time when you don't have a working one. White Mini Fridge
Of course then you'd have to take a cab to get it home. If you want a new one, there are some relatively cheap ones online (free delivery) from Walmart but will still run you $75 or so.
