Workers have every right to change jobs. If you have skills and your corp doesn't treat you well, there are plenty of companies that will happy to poach you and treat you better

Public servants generally do not have choices in their jobs within a city.

Those who are specialist on rail car repairs have one game in town to work for.
Those who teach, have one school district to work for.
Those who police, have one department to work for.

Some administrative, CS, IT jobs can obviously flux between private and public sector and often may whenever the going is better in one or the other- but many core jobs are funded by monopolies of public benefit corporations, so the union workers monopolize on their bargaining.

I have been hoping for that for years. A strike bad enough to force federal intervention and a dissolvement of the current MTA nightmare.

Sucks for taxpayers outside the NY Metro, but once stabilized and automated MTA can operate for 1/3rd what they are paying now.

I'm not adverse paying the employees what they want- but not for such **** poor service.

Look for an announcement on Friday or Saturday that talks have been "extended" and thus no strike.

One key thing also to look for; if the LIRR does go out they almost have to do so either Sunday night or overnight one day during the week. You cannot transport hundreds of workers into Manhattan or wherever on Monday morning then leave them hanging at evening rush hour. While this does often happen it is because of an accident or equipment/infrastructure problems or damage.

Not to mention LIRR workers would have to get trains back into yards if for nothing else to set up picket lines and yes, get themselves home.

Told you so!

Strike averted...

Like I told you so TOO.

Geez...none so dumb as those who learn nothing from experience.

The "running around with hair on fire" people get so predictable.

Strikes are not allowed in the NEW AMERIKA.

Actually the LIRR could have gone out and probably would if someone hadn't knocked some heads together.

With < five months until elections it was a given Cuomo would intervene. For one thing he would be able to brag about "preventing" the strike in his campaign. Had he not acted it would have not only given a nice club to his opponent, but not gone down well with Long Island residents and others who use the RR.

It is like the run up to WWI. You don't call for a strike during the middle of the summer when most persons are away unless you are namby-pamby about going out. If the union *REALLY* wanted to drive home a point they could have worked without a contract and delayed any threats until the Fall or worse during the holiday season. *THAT* would have perked up some ears.
