What is your opinion on the best food markets in NYC? Which is your favorite and why? I am curious as to both specialty markets (ex. the Brighton Bazaar in Brighton Beach) as well as larger more diversified markets.

I recently discovered the Essex Street Market on Essex and Delancey, has a really good mix of vendors serving the needs/wants of both the long-time residents and hipster newcomers. Butchers (both standard and grass-fed), fishmongers, general grocer, bread makers, mixed in with a gallery, Shopsins restaurant, and really good taco and ice cream sellers.

The Essex Market is not what it once was. Prices are high and the place looks sleazy.
I guess the appeal is to the "new money" in the East Village.
<Will they soon open a Starbuck's?>

I definitely wouldn't call it slick but I definitely wouldn't call it sleazy either. You won't get any fantastic sales there but prices are competitive with other places in the neighborhood (both supermarket and specialty).

We were there last week and I was surprised that I could not spot one item that I commonly buy that was not more expensive than my local mid-range markets (Key Food, Associated. C-Town.)
Of course they were cheaper than the $$$$ stores like Fairway, Whole Foods, D'Agastino, and Gristede's, but not by much.

Essex used to be VERY cheap.

This is exactly what I am trying to discern. There is a fine balance between good, quality food items - possibly unique items - that I may be willing to pay more for and the normal stuff you can get at any corner market. I am trying to get as much fresh food as possible and trying to eliminate as much processed food as possible. Now days at the local markets so much is processed I am trying to expand my shopping area to find the better foods. It does cost more, but this is something I am really committed to doing. There are many of these venues in NYC, that is why I ask for some of your favorites.
