my son graduated hofstra law in the top 5% of the class. he was picked up immediately by a very prestigious national firm at 6 figures right from school. in fact they offered him an intern job for the summer before they hired him. the summer pay was at 1600 a week .

I can guarantee you he will quit within four years and will have lost all of his hair and gained 60 pounds.

170 k isn't much when you're working 100 hours a week and are tethered to your BlackBerry.

The good news is that after he quits he could probably get a very nice cushy federal job.

sorry but he is going in to his 6th year and is coming up for partnership in 2 years.

he is as thin as he ever was. he does work long hours many times but it goes with the territory. i would say maybe 45-50 hours typically unless they have to prepare for a big case.

many of his buddies from law school took a while to find jobs . many went in to the da's office in hopes of entering politics. the money is about 1/2 of what you get in private business with a top firm.

Nice! Your son made it in just in time. I thought he just graduated. These days they have it really bad. I hope he gets partner.

it was still pretty tough when he graduated. in fact origonally he applied to their manhattan office but was told they don't recruit from hofstra. they would consider him but wanted him to switch schools.

another branch though made him an offer. the irony is he works very closely in some cases with the partner that told him he had to switch schools to be accepted. they are friends today.

Most likely he is well connected then. Yeh, it is possible to graduate from outside the Top-6 or 15 or whatever, and land a great great job. But for most people it will not happen.

Some of them can work in compliance for a financial institution, although those jobs don't really require law degrees. Pay is not bad - high 5 digits to low 6 digits starting but salary climbs over time. So it's not really top law firm or nothing.

Any idiot can become a lawyer since there is a law school for every level of intelligence (or non intelligence), hence the perpetual oversupply of lawyers which is nothing new.

They are starting to dumb down medical schools now and lowering the bar so the same thing will probably eventually happen to medicine. Up until recently, only the cream of the crop could get into a US med school. Thanks Obamacare.

Was he the Class of 2008? If he was, he just made it under the wire. If he was the Class of 2009, getting that entry level job would have been a miracle.
