Ave D is the ghetto, point blank. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't been there.

That's the truth. I'm reading all this crap from people making snarky remarks to the OP about his question. A lot of these fools have never stepped foot in that area. Yes, that area is right next to the projects and a lot of drug dealer still roam the area at night. I would not live anywhere on Ave D. I remember how bad it was in the 90's but it only got a little bit better.
I'd rather live in Queens or Brooklyn instead.

I live in the area, and I will say that Ave D is sketchy, especially at night, since it is basically the projects and there is not much else around there; no bars or restaurants really, there is a pizza place though. As others have said, you should be fine on Avenues A, B, and (somewhat) C. There are a lot of bars and stuff in Alphabet City, so you are likely to run into drunks late at night, especially on weekends. I wouldn't be any more concerned with this than I would be in any other city, though. Most people just mind their own business and don't hurt anyone. If you are thinking of moving here from someplace else and want a room or an apartment around Ave D, I would strongly advise you to look in another area of East Village/Alphabet City...you won't like it.

I don't feel unsafe anywhere in Alphabet City, including Avenue D. Not even in the projects.

And out of curiosity, what's the lowest rent one can expect to find in Alphabet City?

I used to live half a block from Avenue D about a decade ago... sometimes I'd go to the Kennedy Fried Chicken there. When I saw all the bulletproof glass protection between the workers and the customers, I knew it was a bad sign!! I wonder if they're still like that or maybe things have gotten better over the past 10 years.

There is Avenue "D" and there is Avenue D.

Cannot help but notice each time driving to and from FDR Drive along East Houston gentrification is pushing further east at least long that street. To wit.... Luxurious Avenue D building offers subway shuttle service | New York Post

That being said see plenty of *ahem* transplants, whites, etc... walking along East Houston towards Avenues C and D. Unless they are going to the projects they must obviously live or have business that way.

Being as all this may would not venture much or even a block or two north on Avenue D unless prepared to handle yourself : EV Grieve: [Updated] A bloody crime scene on Avenue D and East 7th Street
