It's literally the most insane place I've ever been in my life - in both good ways and bad. Sometimes when I'm in a cab just watching the city go by, I shake my head and smile about how lucky I am to live here, with the very next thought questioning why anyone would want to subject themselves to living in such a shthole.
For instance, I work all the way downtown, I'm walking around during lunch today looking at a city with great energy, every day walking by world famous landmarks. Seeing people from literally all over the world visit my city. Then I grabbed a $14 salad and ate it at this outdoor cafe, 2 feet from trash stacked along the entire sidewalk, four feet high, twenty feet long. About 20 people standing over you staring, waiting for you to get done lunch so they can take your prized seat in the middle of a trash heap
Basically a mix of third world and first world all in one.
Wealthy rubbing shoulders with destitute, meticulous luxury boutiques located in run down, filthy streets covered with trash, bum vomit and urine. Some kind of people absolutely love it - and it takes a certain type of mentality, the kind who revel and thrive in urban decay.
The "energy" of it may be a different world compared to city centers in the US, but if you've lived in places like Tokyo, Hong Kong, London, it's not something that will bowl you over.
I sometimes marvel at the city and its splendor. Theres a deep sense of history that permeates all of the island. Its like no other place, in terms of its energy and pace as well.
Other times, I feel annoyed to no end at the crowds, smells, grit and dirt.

Manhattan is a concrete jungle. There's a lot of things to hate (crowds, congestion, air quality, bums, trash, mta, $14 salads). But then when i travel to other cities like DC Philly ect i can't seem them compare to New York. There is no other city like New York in America.
When you come here think about how much cash you could possibly spend to live/ visit. Then double that and add a half. BTW that is the formula that I use when I take my E350 into the dealer get it serviced.
