Red Hook is a neighborhood in Brooklyn, where ikea is. In the late 80/'s/early 90's was major crime. Mid/late 90's lots of parties in the abandon warehouses.
Seems totally much different in 2014 than even 2012 lol. Lots of cool people i know live around there who are street smart and are ok with it. Some people who have never encountered any other race/class beyond their own find it a bit sketchy still.
Transportation is a bit rough but nothing that can be handled. Overall if you like the place and can afford it, go for it. Dont let some people on this board tell you about the projects nearby etc deter you.
red hook would be 100x nicer say if the ghetto elements can be cleaned up. it is close to the water and you can swim to work in lower manhattan in the summer time. there is a lot of park/sports facility and close to costco/ikea/fairway, etc. Better to have a car because i would not wait on the street for a bus/train connection while being exposed to the threat of thugs which are abundant there.
Would you be better of on the other side of the Gowanus Expressway? Yes. But if you're getting a good deal and you're fine with the quality of the apartment, absolutely move in. That neighborhood is improving a lot, with a lot of fun bars. I have really enjoyed playing soccer at the recreation center, and even though I live in Crown Heights, I often go to the Ikea on the weekends just to take the free ferry over to Manhattan. Ikea also has a free shuttle that runs every day between their store and Borough Hall, which is convenient! Take a look at the Brooklyn Safety Map stickied to the NYC City Data forums so you know where the housing projects are, but don't let other people on this forum scare you out of this neighborhood.
Red Hook is a fun place to ride a bike, there are not that many cars and the Ikea plaza with all its trails is a bike riders dream.
Love it down there.
We eat at fairway once and a while in the back on the waterside for a quick bite, walk around, so much to see. the harbor views are nothing short of amazing.
It was terrible in the 80's, ranked on of the worst neighborhoods in the US. It is changing so much now and for the better.
Delevan is OK, be street smart, thats all you need to know.
ok....but same idea...why would anyone want to live in a S$%^hole to just say you "live" in NYC.
Its a revolving door. Some yuppie moves into an NYC ghetto, than some ghetto person moves out to Long Island.
