Hey everyone
Ive been planning on moving to manhattan for a while but have a few questions and was hoping you all could advise. I currently work in lower East Harlem and want to move somewhere that is accessible to that area by transportation but don't really want to live in that area itself. I have a few friends who live in the city that recommend a more downtown area since I am relatively young and will likely be living alone.

I don't plan on bringing my car with me, but my boyfriend lives just outside the city in Englewood NJ and I know he would really like it if there was somewhere he could park for cheap for a day or two if he were to visit.

I am under the impression that finding parking is easier on the upper east/west sides rather than downtown but feel that I would probably have more fun living closer to downtown?

I would really appreciate it if anyone has a recommendation for an area to look for an apartment or tips about finding parking.

Thanks in advance!

Carrie

Most important is what's your budget? Studio/1br? Everyone wants to live in certain areas but being able to afford it is another story.

Exactly how much can one afford for rent is the most important factor?!

Easy parking in Englewood NJ for your boyfriend, before he boards the train to NYC, gets off Penn Station and transfers by subway to find you..wherever YOU decide to live.

Have you had that conversation yet with him? How did it go? That'll tell you a lot about whether or not you want to pay any attention whatsoever to his request to include NYC parking on your list of criteria. Apartment hunting is hard enough without worrying about parking for your visitors.

Tips: If he hopes to drive right up and find a free space within 15 minutes, not realistic. If he loves you enough to cruise around 30-40 minutes sometimes until he sees someone leaving a spot (you can come join him in the car!) within 6 blocks, more realistic. If that fails and he's ready to pay for a parking garage sometimes, most realistic.

Thanks for all your replies! Ideally, I would like to pay 1900 total for rent and utilities but would find a roommate if I absolutely couldn't find a studio within my budget. I understand that this won't get me a huge apartment anywhere, but really don't need a big space as long as its an area I like.

Also, we have talked about this--he says he would do what he has to do to visit but he just isn't great with buses or trains as we are used to driving where we live and I'm not sure how long you can park at these places or if you'll get a ticket for parking at the station overnight.

I really appreciate your advice!
