everyone has different reasons, some people like neighborhoods based on the fact they are newcomers and it has a lot to do, others like neighborhoods because theyve lived here for generations and there is family environment with strong roots, others like neighborhoods because of aesthetic beauty (architecture, water, lawns, etc)

If youre looking to move to NY, Manhattan is probably your best bet. Many (not all) people get disappointed in the other boroughs because it is a more family type feel and newcomers often have no family/friends there so it gets lonely compared to Manhattan where there is always new blood.

Forest Hills Gardens - very beautiful English garden style architecture, mansions and large houses, large lots, spotlessly clean, well-manicured properties, private parks for residents, close to transportation and highways. Close to shopping/restaurants/movie theaters on Austin St. & QB. Forest Park nearby with golf, horseback riding, free entertainment. Wonderful for families. Excellent schools.
Forest Hills is nice too, and has all of the above listed amenities, but is better for singles or couples, because there are many beautiful co-ops, condos, and rentals.

Douglaston - very beautiful architecture and landscaping, large houses/mansions, clean, gorgeous views of Little Neck Bay, park & golf course, close to highway. Good shopping center with multiplex movie theater. Wonderful for families. Excellent schools.

Jamaica Estates – beautiful, large houses, clean, well-manicured properties; areas near Hillside Ave. are very close to transportation & shopping, Cunningham Park nearby with golf/driving range, tennis, free music. Wonderful for families.

Kew Gardens - beautiful architecture and landscaping, close to transportation, highways & shopping, large houses, lots of well-maintained, full or partial service apartment buildings, Forest Park nearby with golf, horseback riding, free entertainment. A few good restaurants. Excellent revival movie theater. Very good schools; elementary school are excellent. Wonderful for families and singles.

Upper West Side/Morningside Heights – many gorgeous, large pre-war apartments, with high ceilings, huge windows and ornamental mouldings. Gorgeous sunset views of the Hudson River. Riverside Park, Grant’s Tomb, Lincoln Center, etc. Central Park is nearby. Lots of cultural activities, many of them free or cheap. Lots of great restaurants and bars. Shopping is excellent. Convenient transportation. Great for singles. Good for families.

At what point does the upper west side become Hell's kitchen? Or am I way off track? In other words, is there a cutoff point where a single female would be better to stay clear of due to crime?
Thanks.
