The team originated in Boston & were nicknamed the Braves, similar to the baseball team which subsequently moved to Milwaukee, then Atlanta. When the football franchise relocated to DC, the nickname was changed to the Redskins.
Ironically, when the Braves moved to Atlanta, they displaced a team named the Crackers! Atlanta Crackers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Atlanta Negro League team was called ... the Black Crackers! Atlanta Black Crackers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At one time, the terms Yankee & Canuck were considered derogatory.

The Washington Post started this policy a couple of weeks ago. But only on the editorial page. The sports section will still use the name "Redskins". Seems like they're trying to have it both ways.
Honestly, if we're this worried about all the more important matters there are to cover, which I am totally for doing, we should probably just be against professional sports leagues in general because the amount of time and resources spent on something so incredibly useless when there are so many other issues a-foot is ridiculous. So, yea, let's go with that line of thought.
Simply pathetic. Don't we have bigger problems to be worrying about, than this nonsense?
I for one am sick of these media people trying to make the news rather than just reporting it.
Amazingly, some of us actually have brains large enough such that we can worry about more than one thing at a time.
You sound...kind of creepy here. Very, very angry over such a small thing. I mean, who cares if a newspaper decides how they're going to refer to a team 5 hours away? Don't you have more important things to worry about?
Gee -- I'm angry that the media always had an agenda. Whether it's the "Redskins" issue, whether it's them pushing gay marriage every way they can, whether it's protecting an incompetent, lazy, liar (that would be our president). I agree with you, the name itself IS a minor issue. But in the bigger picture it's not minor.
Anyone referring to The Daily News as "Leftist" must be a closet Nazi.
"Trash media" however will not you get any argument.
Remember, these teams all depend on public attendance, and media purchases...they cannot afford to offend ANYONE.
(Black Crakers is a hoot. Made me thing of the mixed racial team, the Omaha Oreos.)
