I don't know how many times myself and others have brought up this disconnect between crime and real estate prices. Our mod even started a discussion on this exact topic just last week, and many came on saying that kind of stuff can happen anywhere in the city. Of course it can, its just that the chances of it happening in Bed-Stuy or Bushwick are much greater. The area has made a ton of progress, but still has a ways to go.

Nothing new. Many of these areas are a rip off.

I love Bed Stuys architecture though.

Looking at the numbers a good portion of the crime is property related (muggings, robbery, etc....) which is a natural and organic occurrence of "wealth" moving into areas where there had previously been little.

Upper Eastside, Upper Westside, Tribeca, etc... More often than not property crimes in wealthy areas of NYC are committed by persons from elsewhere drawn to the place because as the oft quoted saying goes "that is where the money is".

It does not help matters that many of these new transplants to BedStuy, Bushwick, etc... are well simply clueless about living in the "hood". They get jacked or homes broken into because not only to they flash their wealth but do not take precautions to protect themselves.

Also beware that many crimes are not reported to the police. Then you also have crimes that are down graded by pcts so they don't show up as felonies. There are tons of crimes that are swept under the rug that you will never know about.

X2. I actually posted earlier when Debozo took over. Not that crime would skyrocket throughout the City but was wary of areas in transition. See what happens.

The article said: "There has also been an uptick in burglaries and muggings targeting the gentrifiers who move in."

Does this mean the number of burglaries and muggings has gone up overall? Or it's the same amount as before but the target has changed in order for the burglars to gain the biggest windfall.

Moderator cut: Orphaned comment

It seems that the new residents are being targeted as Bugsy posted.

Don't think it is necessarily anything to do with whomever is mayor, but again what happens when people unfamiliar with "the hood" move in and they happen to have a bit more than the natives.

Case in point; back in the 1990's a co-worker moved to Clinton Hill because she believed the (then) hype the area was coming up. In one year her apartment was broken into (she came home to find the door kicked in), another she went into her kitchen to find a black man climbing into her (open) kitchen window via drain pipe. In the latter case because she screamed it frightened off the guy but one shudders to think had she remained in another part of the apartment longer and he had gained entry. Oh yes her young man's car was stolen as well. Needless to say the chick moved out which is a shame because now that area is red hot and her former apartment goes for >$2000/month.

White/Europeans moving to Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Fort Greene, etc.. have been getting jacked/robbed ever since the 1980's or 1990's it is nothing new. Remember reading in the NYT a few years ago now about a group of French roommates living in Williamsburg whose apartment was broken into while they were at work (daytime). Lucky for them the building's super was about and spotted what was going on and called the NYPD. Long story short men were caught and the stuff recovered. Of course the question is why did they target that particular apartment?

Back in the day the UWS was like the Wild West. Between drug dealing, prostitution, mugging, rapes, etc... you often valued your life cheaply living in that area. This was in the 1970s' and 1980's!
