Is it possible to put video cameras on public lamp posts? I was wondering if the residents of a neigborhood wanted to tackle crime better than the cops, could they install video camera on their homes and streets (somehow). Also, would it be possible to connect the cams to the local precinct?

This may go a long way to tackle crime in certain areas especially if citizens want to take the initiative and eb proactive.

Between the police street video cameras and most building video cameras ( both inside and outside) most blocks in the entire city are already pretty well covered. The only gaps are probably in areas without apartment buildings, the areas with mostly single and 2 or 3 family houses.I know the whole walk between my front door and the subway platform and the whole walk to and around my shopping area and in all the stores is completely covered. Most of the city is like this whether people know it or not.

Increased surveillance could be one of the reasons why crime has been going down for the last couple of decades, not sure.

That's the area I was concerned with. I agree most other areas are covered pretty good.
