Have noticed for awhile now that many streets in Manhattan at least reek of urine and or rotting rubbish. That and an odd nauseating mixture of disinfectant and sewage/rubbish.

IMHO much of the urine scent seems to be from dogs which everyone and their mother seems unable to live without in the City today. There used to be "Curb Your Dog" signs but do not see them much and or many seem not to have gotten the message. People let their dogs "go" everywhere from against the sides of buildings to middle of the sidewalks. Once that stuff gets into the concrete it never really comes out.

our whole city is dirty.
we have the worst sanitation dept on earth.

we need to focus more on the cleanliness of our city rather than banning sugary drinks.
why is it Florida is so clean, the highways grass is clean, there is no dirt, the buildings are clean.
Our streets are litter strewn, dirty. garbage all over. Our highways are dirty, garbage stuck in the fences, the off ramps are filled with litter.
Our streets are dirty, not enough garbage pails, and the ones that are there are always full and over flowing.

Bloomberg did so many things, but cleanliness was not even at the bottom of the list, it wasn't on the list.

immigrants from developing wolds bring their low standards and habits of hygiene to nyc. the sanitation dept might want to hold training sessions on how to live a clean life in nyc. all those hispanic, indian, chinese, parkistani enclaves are absolutely unlivable and sadly these terrotories keep expanding in nyc.
i like how russian immigrants keep their enclaves tidy and lean though.

City has always been dirty and smelly. I do agree the dog situation has gotten worse though. Too many irresponsible dog owners.

I can't speak for the other groups but if you've ever been to places in East Asia like Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, they're spotless and practically litter free. So it isn't really because of immigrants.

I think it's in the culture of this city.

Since they were paved.

I'm just a flat-lander tourist who has visited NY City a handful of times, but I have to say, my first impression was that it was really, really, REALLY grimy and dirty.

I was surprised, because I'd always heard so much about what a spectacular place it is.

And yes, the urine smell seemed omnipresent.

Also it seems avenues or streets near many bars also have a urine whiff but that is from the guys (and at least on one occasion witnessed by Moi, a girl) doing their business on sidewalks, against buildings, gutters, etc... Then there is the vomit stench as well.

In the East 80's and 70's between Third and Second find a lot of the above. All those guys (and the odd girl) drink all that beer then cannot hold their water. That or the lines to bathrooms must be very long.

Think also as NYC has increased water rates every year for the past six or so and has installed those new digital meters many buildings aren't hosing down sidewalks like they used to. Know many of those new trees the City is planting everywhere are dying from lack of water. Many buildings/homeowners are not willing to run up their water bills for something they neither requested or wanted. Some do though like around the UES and other areas where buildings have planted nice tree bed gardens.
