LOL, Jake The NYC media I have a feeling just scrolls the internet for stories. What if a reporter God forbid actually hit the pavement. Go out and interview the shop keeper or local guy who sits on the stoops 24/7.

"Scoop!" "Run the story!" is what passes for journalism today. And, they sent a photographer out to take her picture at the scene of the horrible incident!
No old-time editors still around, who would have told the reporter, "No story here, kid. Go out & find some real news."

Body cameras wouldn't change anything about this situation. Even if this woman's account is 100% true, the cops did nothing wrong at all. What difference would the cameras make?

A lot of media organizations have laid off old time editors and for that matter writers. Particularly since they failed to adapt to the internet era. So now their business model is cheap, trashy articles that are likely to get CLICKS. It's click bait, plain and simple.

But don't worry, it's a fad like all the others and people will soon get tired of these cop stories.

People have been praying for a crime wave to lower real estate prices in NYC for decades, only prices go up and gentrification has only spread (I remember the 90s when the West and East Villages were starting to get expensive).

It's not happening.

A new crime wave isn't happening, either. Giuliani and Bloomberg forced out much of the city's underclass permanently for starters. Or they were cut off services and died out in the street or whatever. Or they were killed by the NYPD. The lowest levels of the underclass do not have long shelf life (they kill each other more than anyone else, overdose on whatever drugs or booze, die from diseases, get killed by cops, etc.)

Plenty of people who were arrested due to those Rico Laws back in the early 90s are probably getting out now or soon. With no jobs lined up for many of these individuals life is going to be hard. Most of these folks are of Italian, African American, Puerto Rican descent and other ethnic groups that fueled NYC crime rave a generation ago.

Out of jail and in a few years into the nursing home. LOL

I have a friend who is a psychologist who works with this population. Ultimately they'll hit the bottle or the drugs really hard and at this older age (more medical problems have set in) it kills them that much faster.

Well, the saying is if you can't do the time don't do the crime, and the ethnicity of these people is ultimately irrelevant. A lawbreaker is a lawbreaker.

It also seems that re-writers, copy editors & proofreaders have vanished.
How does 'motherload' get printed?

Looks like you're correct. Revenues are down. Advertising dollars, which used to comprise 90% of a newspaper's revenue, are shifting to the web & TV.

I wish this was true. I'm not as hopeful as you. When you consider that crime is down 50% in this country and 80% in NYC, you'd expect media to find something else to focus on. Why not education, employment and quality of life?

Praying? That's cold!
If 9/11 and the 2008 recession didn't do it, crime won't either. If deB wants to do something, give tax breaks for owner-occupied homes and working-class apartments, to employed people!

Very few have died in the street or killed each other. NYPD killings are at all-time lows.
No one should regret the departure of the underclass. They serve no useful function and abuse & overwhelm city services. If they wise up and get jobs, all the better.
