I am moving to the NYC area in a few months and am needing some advice on areas to look for apartments. I am from the southeast so have very little knowledge about the area. I have a rent budget of $2000 per month. I am willing to have a roommate. I don't really care about the image regarding living right in Manhattan, so am definitely open to living in any borough (NY or NJ).

I am working in the financial district and would like an efficient commute. What are some safer, cheaper, but still fun boroughs to live in?

Thanks in advance.

I too agree that some place in Brooklyn would be the closest for an efficient commute.

With Wall St. destination, the efficient commute is from Brooklyn, not Astoria/LIC (Queens). From Brooklyn, for example, take the a 3 train from Grand Army Plaza for a 15-20 minute ride to the Wall St. stop.

To me, it looks like Astoria's got a 40 minute commute, often using 2 trains with the change in Times Square.

I've also heard from friends that Staten Island can work okay for working in Wall St., but I didn't check the Hopstop information on it.

I think you would like Bay Ridge Brooklyn. You can take the Express bus X27 to work everyday so you don't have to deal with the morning train commute. The bus will drop you off downtown plus Bay Ridge is safe and affordable.
