I do have my own car and I make an annual salary of $61,500 a year. I am thinking about finding nice a place in Queens. Is Queens a nice area to live? I just want to avoid Manhattan at all costs. I will be using my car only on the weekends ( I don't want to get rid of my beautiful car LOL) and taking public transit to my job in Manhattan. I just want to know what area of the boroughs of NYC are nice. By the way in San Antonio I was paying for a 2 bedroom apartment for $950.00 a month in a upscale side of SA but I know NYC is impossible to rent a 2 bedroom apt for that price so I am looking at a studio or 1 bedroom apartment. Thanks.

WOOOOOOW. 950 for a two bedroom???? I am still stuck at "wow". How is SA? Why do you want to move? I never been to TX but always wanted to check it out.

Hummm..If you MUST keep your car, I would suggest checking out Jersey City near the PATH. It should be a super easy commute to the FiDi during the week. I saw someone suggested Staten Island, but that commute can be quite a pain, esp on the weekend and you probably wouldn't enjoy the city as much. JC commute can be a pain on the weekends too, but seems a lot easier than Staten Island.

Some places in Queens or BK might be okay too, but no idea where.

Rent anywhere in NYC is going to be wayyyy above $950/Month, even for a studio. You might want to consider getting a roomate to keep your rent anywhere near that number. After living in this area for a few months, you'll probably be reconsidering keeping your car. It will be nice to have on the weekends, but you'll find that you won't need it much and it will be much more of a headache and expense than a convenience.

If you are close to the ferry or a train stop with express service, the commute to the tip of lower Manhattan is actually painless from SI. The only hiccup is the ferry from time to time. In about a year or so, express bus service will be much improved also due to ongoing construction projects to create a nearly-complete loop of HOV/Bus lanes from SI to Manhattan.
