There was a security issue in the building at that time and homeless people would let themselves in and do whatever they wanted in the hallways.

8 years ago might seem like the dark ages to you, but it's a rent stabilized building and who knows if they have managed to get their act together since then. My friend moved out around 2006 or so because she was convinced she would never be rid of the bedbugs if she stayed.

Wow alright, great info. Thanks a ton

Well that's one off that list, surely there are other great rooms in midtown sub $1000, no?

122 Norfolk St. - Rental Unit Apartment Rental in Lower East Side, Manhattan | StreetEasy
This is an exclusive listing which means the total broker fee for the apt alone would be 15% of annual non negotiable for a total of $5850.

Anyhow getting the apt itself would be the hardest as you will need to qualify for it by the total income being 40x's the monthly rent or if you can guarantor need to make 80x's the monthly rent.

Your best bet would be to stay in a hostel for a few weeks/month and get yourself a bit situated and try to get a room only instead. When looking for a room ask the lease situation and if you need to provide proof income or sign on the lease or just give a few months advance.

Good to know, yeah I thought it'd be too good to be true. Yeah, way out out of my budget, thought it'd be doable to co-sign.

Alright, I think that's the definitive route to take for now, safest & cheapest as well. Will do that for sure (asking for lease), worst comes to worst & I'm a few hundred short. My parents are willing to help me out if need be. Here's to hoping I'l find a roommate & is relatively chill w/ the situation.

Thanks for all the help here, I'm buying my one-way ticket now for the end of November & hopefully start school in the second semester. If possible, I'll situated in the city in a month. Worst case scenario if I don't find a roomate within that time period, I'll hopefully find a job by then & just work & save $ 'til the next semester.
