I want to mention that sometimes one can get also in Jackson Heights a one bedroom apt. for $1300-$1400 that is NOT a basement apt. But one does have to look around to find these deals.

Just curious.. how clean and spacious is your apartment? Any lack in amenities?

Through craigslist a couple of years back. Granted, prices have probably risen a little bit since then, but even then was a deal. My landlady is very old and does not raise the rent. She also does not live in the house which is great.

Place is not large. Probably 450 sq feet or so. It is also a bit dated. Clean, just kind of dated. Bathroom could surely use a renovation, but it's fine. No roaches or anything. No washer and dryer either anywhere, as it is a house divided up into apartments.

When she goes, her kids will most surely kick us all out, renovate the hell out of the place and jack up to prices significantly. I just wanted to give an example of deals that are out there if you look/get lucky. I have a buddy who has been living in jersey for a while and is looking at places in the city again. He and his wife are seeing 1 beds for $1,800 or so south of Harlem even. He has no reason to lie to me. They're obviously not luxury, but they're out there.

I meant CAN, not CAN'T. I apologize, was typing fast. But yes, you can find 1300 for a 1 bedroom in many parts of Queens. I will even say in many parts of the city. People just have to look, but they are out there. I was able to find a three bedroom for about 1,000 to 1500 less than 3 bedrooms in the surrounding area. Deals are around.

Well, to be honest, i didn't find my place via craigslist. My cousin linked me with the place I am in now. So there wasn't much effort on my part. I have heard good things about craigslist, you just need to be careful and do your due diligence before giving anyone money.

Also, just because a place says the asking price doesn't mean you need to pay it. Negotiate! Also, if you can, just find some areas and walk around. Many places have for rent signs up front. A friend did that and found a 1200 a month 1 bedroom in Queens.

That's how I found my place. I just walked or biked around, took down numbers and talked to people in the streets. Be careful using Craig's list, there are a lot of scammers out there.

Yeah footing it around a area or two is the BEST way in my opinion. You get VERY good deals that way.
