Any idea on what spot has the best offer for me when trying to exchange US Dollars for Japanese yen?
I use to do it at the 399 Park Ave Citibank but they no longer do it at all. A nearby branch does it, but you have to be a member of Citibank, which I am not and don't really want to become. Anyone know another bank or Currency Exchange place that will do it for me in the city and offer me a good rate? Please let me know. Thanks.

IMO your best bet is to exchange with someone going to Japan. The banks and exchange houses will not give you the best rate.

Thomas Cook does foreign currency exchanges and they have a few Manhattan locations.
Thomas Cook: Foreign Exchange

Also TD Bank as well as Bank Of America do foreign currency exchanges but I don't know if they would have Japanese yen available for a walk-in customer.

Money changing is a very profitable business. Unless you are a big corporation that exchanges a lot of currency as part of their business, you will not get a favorable rate from either a bank or a non-bank . Are you wanting to exchange actual cash? If so, many recommend the company linked below.

Currency Exchange NYC | Omnex Group Uno Foreign Exchange - (212) 279-6150

In Korea suprisingly I found the cheapest exchange desk was at the airport, which you would think would be the biggest tourist trap. Cheaper than NYC and cheaper than elsewhere in Seoul

You went to one bank, and then gave up? Did you bother to check the yellow pages and call around? As Chava says, Cook is one obvious possibility, but I know places like the Apple Bank on 42nd have a separate little built-in currency exchange place. In the past I went to Manfra, Tordella & Brookes, but I'm not sure if they do that any more.

I just used this place and have to say that I'm very pleased I did. Based on my research of different places before heading out, this place by far had the best rates. Using them vs. travelex, for instance, I received over 10 GBP more, which can only help; ultimately, though, I hate feeling like I'm getting ripped off. Granted, travelex is known for high rates, but I found that their rates aren't far from the norm in NYC.
