believe it or not the blocking and narrrowing of B'way was first cited in the NY Times way back in 1978. "New Times Square Waits In The Wings" the article was called

How long have you lived in NYC? How do you get around? Is it possible that you're not aware of how that screwed up the buses? Is it possible that you really think that was a good use of taxpayer money to overhaul TS when there are so many other more pressing needs? Is it possible that you think there's something attractive about tourists milling around or flopped in rickety chairs eating fast food? Is it possible that you're not aware that there are much pleasanter places to sit in the vicinity that already exist?

I love the tourists. They are an indicator of our economic might as the world capital.

Considering how many of our "pressing needs" need to be subsidized by other industries, it's surprising you're so ignorant on the importance of the district and maintaining it as cash-cow. Even if it's annoying to you, the ~$100M investment allows more people to be in the square, made it safer as a pedestrians, increased street level rents, and thus increased the city's tax revenue. Since the pedestrianization, Times Square has become among the most valuable retail locations in the world.

"Times Square is a small space of enormous consequence. Though it comprises only 0.1% of New York City’s land area, Times Square supports 10% of the city’s jobs and generates 11% of its economic output. With over 170,000 workers, 17,000+ hotel rooms, and 29 million SF of office space, the district is a major commercial, retail and entertainment center."

Cida is probably one of the idiots on this forum who yearn for the "grit" and "character" of the 70s and 80s.

As far as I'm concerned, these people are not fans of New York City or America.

You're missing the point. Do you think there are no tourists elsewhere in the city? For that matter, don't you think NYC would be better served by tourists going to MoMA or Saks or Katz's, instead of hanging around in a garish ugly open space?

And we're not the world's capital. Comments like that just highlight why people think New Yorkers are insufferably arrogant.

Wait a sec - you're going to base your opinion on public relations materials from Times Square? What else would you expect them to say other than how perfect TS is?

Like it or not, New York is the world's most important city. Period. I don't care what a bunch of hilljacks from Nowheresville, USA think of me.

My opinion is based on my personal experiences. Regardless of the exact numbers they've determined, it's hard to argue that maintaining/improving the pedestrian experience in Times Square isn't a lucrative investment for the city. Whether you like it or not is another matter...

I'd take their study over your childish complaints of tourists sitting in chairs eating fast food...the horror...

Times Square, the non-stop commercial break of the sitcom that is Manhattan. I fast forward through commercials.
