I'm planning on buying either a new or used car in NYC (I currently live in Queens) then move to Los Angeles about a month later by driving across the country.
I'll be doing a cross country trip with my girlfriend and just take what fits in the vehicle and shipping the rest.
I was going to rent a car, but feel it's expensive and I feel it's best to put that moving towards an actual purchase.
Any tips on registering and paying taxes on the car when it comes to moving to another state?
Also, what are your thoughts on buying vs renting in my situation?
Just off the top of my head you would have to have it retro fitted to meet California's strict smog emissions requirements. You should look into the cost of doing that before you do anything else.

Not necessry if the car is "California compliant," and newer cars purchased in NY, NJ, PA and other states meet CA air pollution rules.
NYC cars meet CA standards. There are a few states that do.
In point of fact the OP should just ship everything fly out there rent a car for a few days, till he can buy his own car, unless he explicitly wants the experience of driving cross country.

If you buy a car in one state, when you live in another state, you can get temporary plates/registration (good for 30 days or so), and then permanently register the car in the state you live in. I did this in buying a car in NJ, while living in NY. I don't know if you can do this if you buy the car with intent to immediately move to another state. It might be worth a call to DMV.
Keep in mind NYC is one of the worst places in the country to buy a used car. Used vehicles around here tend to have a lot more wear and tear than cars in other states, particularly California which is one of the best.
