I haven't been to Boston since I was a kid so I can't comment on the areas you mentioned. However I don't think carrying mace is necessary. I also don't think it's necessary to use the Church Avenue stop. If anything I think Church Avenue is worse because it's a more rowdy environment. The blocks around Kings County Hospital are real desolate, barely anybody walks around there at night, but its much closer to the hospital than Church Avenue is. Maybe the safest way is to walk down Parkside Avenue, there's a Sanitation garage at the corner of Parkside Avenue and New York Avenue, that might give you a little peace of mind and help you feel safer until you get more comfortable with the area.
