Hey everyone, I have a cousin who is a 19 year old college freshman at Elon University in North Carolina. She is a big city kind of girl & has decided that she wants to go to school in a big city & has set her eyes on NY. Her family lives in VA, so all the NY schools will be out of state for her. She is currently looking at Fordham, NYU, & Marymount Manhattan. She likes Forham, but it is more expensive than the school she is at now & isn't in Manhattan. Likes NYU but again is more expensive than her current school & she is worried about workload. Likes Marymount, is cheaper than the school she is at now, is in Manhattan, but isn't a well known school, but she would most likely get financial aid to Marymount making it very cheap. Where do you guys think she should apply & what would be the best fit. NYU is her top choice but she is worried about being overwhelmed with homework & not being able to afford it. Also, if there are any other schools that she might like that are good, reasonably priced schools, please tell me. Thank you!

Hunter College or Baruch.

Queens College if she wants to study in the borough. It might also be easier and cheaper to find an apartment in Queens.

St. John's University is cheaper than Fordham.

It really depends on what she wants to major in for her degree. There are tons of colleges in NYC but not all will be a good fit. For the price conscious, there's also the CUNY system, which has excellent colleges.

Hunter College & Baruch both have lower acceptance rates than NYU though. She thinks she can get in to NYu but barely

She isn't exactly price conscious, she needs to stay under $40K with tuition & Room & Board though because that is the price of her current school

I forgot to mention Pace.

BTW - If graduate school (at a large research university) is in the plans, she might get a better undergrad educ at Marymount given the smaller class sizes. What kind of financial aid is Marymount offering?

they haven't offered her anything, she hasn't applied to any schools yet. But her grades & test scores far exceed Marymount's averages, so she is likely to get academic scholarships

Since NYU is her top choice, how hard is NYU to get into when transferring, & if she does get in, is the workload as heavy as everyone makes it seem?

Hard. Even more so money-wise. They have already made commitments to the freshman, students admitted the first time around.

If she is concerned about workload she probably will not be admitted.

she got in the first time around & it was her second choice & decided against it for monetary reasons. but she said she is willing to take on some loans this time around making it more feasible. not to mention it is typically easier to get in as a transfer because you have already been accepted to another University & they take that into account. But she is only worried about workload because she doesn't want to be in NY if she can't experience the city because she is too busy doing work in her dorm/ the library
