Just curious if New Yorkers recycle any of their garbage. Will be moving to NYC at the end of next week from the UK. Here my local council collects, in different bags and boxes the following: paper/cardboard, glass bottles and jars, plastic containers, metal food/soda cans and aluminum foil, food waste (fruit, veg, meat, fish, bones which is composted), garden waste (grass cuttings, weeds, plant prunings etc. which is also composted and used on council gardens and such like). They also collect garbage bags for everything else that cannot be recycled which is put into landfill.
Most people sort out all the different recyclables and put them out on the correct day each week but a few can't be bothered.
What happens in NYC?

NYC has strict recycling laws. Paper/cardboard, milk & juice cartons, glass bottles and jars, plastic containers, metal food/soda cans and aluminum foil are all separated from the regular trash for recycling.

NYC has recycling. But since most people live in multi-unit buildings, and it's difficult to determine who's garbage is who's, I don't know how effective it is. The building workers may try to keep things sorted, to keep the building from getting fined. I just don't know how much the tenants care or cooperate.
