On an early Wednesday evening? How many of you grocery shop there often?
I happened to be in town once and wanted to pick up some TJ bread there The line was freaking long and I left without any second thought. I thought Costco lines were overly long on weekends, but nothing comparable to TJ lines. Why could not they open a couple more stores if it is so popular?
It's been that way for years. I forgot how long they've been at that location but I've been going at least since 2010 (?) maybe even a year or two before that and it's usually crowded like that most of the time. However sometimes I've been able to luck up and find no line outside the door although inside it will be pretty full. FWIW, the TJ in downtown Brooklyn is the same way (though no lines outside the door) but the cashiers in both locations are fast so the line moves quickly. In fact, every TJ that I've gone to in the area: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island, and two different townships in NJ have all had quite a crowd no matter what time of the day I've gone.
I don't see Aldi giving TJ's competition. They don't take credit cards and they charge you for bags. I also think their products aren't on the same quality level as TJ's. I don't see them winning over TJ's yuppy crowd.
Where do you shop down there? I bet they don't fuss over chlorine rinsed prepackaged organic kale where you are?
I have my choice of 10 supermarkets, including a TJ within 15 minutes driving time of where I live. There is a big emphasis on organic and locally grown foods here.
You must have run into the dinner crowd. That Trader Joes is in a popular location as well. There are other locations in Manhattan and in the other boroughs.
Because it is less expensive than other grocery stores, it gets crowded as the day goes on. I often make grocery runs to the Joes' in the morning before it gets crowded. It's really an early morning/late evening kind of store if you hate crowds- and forget about the holidays.
It was around 6:30pm. I guess it would take the last person on line 30 min at least before getting ready to hop on the train home.
They don't have to go through the bother and expense as long as there are idiots who don't mind waiting in line forever to buy something.
I figure that Manhatanites have grown unlimited patience in lining up for things activities. It is a natural selection process and those who could not survive it may all have moved to less crowded places like the bronx.

I heard that ppl in Idaho and neighboring states share that mentality, fresh farm organic products. I should probably invest in a country house there instead of a dingy apt in NYC.
their check out lines are long because they don't buy enough square footage to for their stores in NYC.
poor planning and architecture.
whenever I see a long checkout line I keep walking, weather it be Chop'd, Chiptole, TJ's etc.. ain't nobody got time for that.
