Hi Im a 23 year old Irish girl moving to NYC with a friend in April on a graduate visa. We are looking for affordable accommodation in a nice neighborhood with a reasonable commute to Manhattan. Preferably an area with young professionals. We are willing to spend $700 each for rent. Also we will be looking for work in the areas of social work/ community outreach if anyone has any information on employment in either area.Any suggestions would be great..!

If you're looking for a 2BR apartment for only $1400-1500, you are NOT going to have a reasonable commute. In addition, a lot of major landlords won't want to rent to you without your having jobs lined up already.

Does your school have dorms or apartment placement? Do you also have a work Visa?

Yes my friend is a US citizen and I will have a one year work visa.No unfortunately my school has no dorms..What areas would you find reasonable rental prices within say an hours commute from the city? Ive spent two summers living in Woodlawn Bronx which I liked but I open to living in a new area..!

Your budget is going to keep you pretty far out in the outer boroughs, so Woodlawn might be an option again for you. You can definitely find apartments in your price range at the far end of the hour commute range in Brooklyn/Queens/the Bronx; definitely not Manhattan. Your biggest issue is going to be your lack of employment; unless you're willing to pony up a significant amount of pre-paid rent upfront and/or security, a lot of landlords won't want to rent to you.

In Queens, you can try Elmhurst, Rego Park, Ridgewood and Briarwood.
