@OP - thanks. The fare goes up, but the train doesn't get cleaner, doesn't come more often, always reduced service on the weekends, and so on. So ridiculous.

They really have no business raising the fare especially after the bed bug outbreak in the summer of 2014 on the N and Q line. That issue never got closure and I'm sure it'll resurface again this summer.

I'd be fine rides going up another buck if they improved the system. But any fare raises will just go to bloated employee pay and pension costs. There is basically zero chance of substantial improvements to the system.

I agree. Certain stations need a make over because they look so dirty. I agree that it's all going to employee compensation and a lot of them don't even have higher education.

And you know the MTA is corrupt because you know there's hidden money somewhere or someone is illegally wiring funds to god knows where. The city in general is very corrupt. And as you read from the article, the number is riders increased per day. Supply and demand gives MTA the chance to run a muck and charge and raise as they please. I'm surprised they aren't going on strike again.

They make 2K after taxes every 2 weeks. That's more then enough for someone to just operate a train or drive a bus.

Several years ago an economist actually worked out a proposal for FREE subways (yes! free! as in -- NO FARES) that involved only a reshuffling of tax dollars.

Does anyone recall that article?

It was either in the Times or New York magazine.

Nothing is ever free, and a proposal in a magazine does not mean it's politically or economically viable.

So then that is a 10% increase ($.25/$2.50) and a 6% decrease (11% bonus compared to 5% bonus) for a net increase of 4%. It could be worse.
I'll hold off putting extra money on my card and then put on $80 on March 23.

I'm pretty sure they would have tried for MUCH more, but they kind of knew that DeBlasio would hammer them with everything he could if they got greedy. I think they originally wanted +7.5%.

Does anyone know the increase for reduced-fare riders? $.10, $.15 ??? My guess is a dime.
