Yep. And when people are baying for blood and want taxes raised on the "rich" its the successful workers with ordinary income that pay the bulk of that increase - not the really wealthy, idle or not....

Politicians will pander to that because then they can say "I increased taxes on the rich", and after all $250K is an amazing income in some parts of the country, but the politicians don't damage their biggest donors who aren't getting that much ordinary income anyway.

The working class lad who has made it good as a doctor is paying a greater percentage in taxes than those above him and those below him.

"Middle class" in NYC would be considered "poverty" elsewhere.

That's my point.

These rich people whining about being "middle class" have no clue how the middle class in this city really live.

Back to OP's original question- is that going to be his salary here? Just because he makes $450k in Beverly Hills doesn't mean that he will make the same amount here.

Thank you.
figure out where you want to live, and find rents for that area. Multiply that by 40,000. That will tell you how much you should be making AFTER taxes to be able to hold that sort of rent down. Then figure out how much the private school is a year for each kid. Then figure food etc which you can base off of your current situation. You will also need to figure out what 450,000 looks like after taxes. You should be good from that point. My guess is, you will be fine.

Indeed. Wouldn't be surprised if the OP was a troll post, either.

$167,000 puts you in the top 5%.

And over $350,000 puts you in the top 1%.

So what we have here is a family of one-percenters wringing their hands over the "affordability" of New York.

Oy.
That is NYC - not Manhattan. And certainly doesn't take into account other demographics... Such as age, family etc.

The middle class is not defined by the income you make relative to other people in your city. The median income or average income doesn't define the middle class. The middle class is defined by standard of living and quality of life. For example, the median household income in the Bronx is $32k. That doesn't mean the middle class in the Bronx makes $32,000. That means that the Bronx has really low middle class population. In fact, only the top 6% of the Bronx population is middle class.

According to what standards and what source of information?

The middle class has become somewhat ill defined as currently USED in US politics.
