Here's the thing: I feel like my room is too warm. My roommate (different room) always sets the thermostat to 73. I lower it to 65 and he keeps changing it without telling me anything.

I decided to sleep with my window open and now he's telling me that his room is "chilly" because I leave my window open and it affects the heating in his room. He also told me that by doing that, I'm damaging the heat system.

So, am I crazy for opening the window or do I have the right to do it?

Only open your window when you are inside your bedroom and your bedroom door is closed. Before you exit your bedroom to go into the rest of the apartment, close your window. Also buy a draft blocker to block the small space between your floor and the bottom of the door.

Have you talked to the roommate about why you open the window? I used to do this because a roommate cranked up the heat and I can't sleep if I'm too hot. We didn't argue about it, but if she had brought it up I would have said that I can't sleep when it's 73 degree inside. (my preference is really ~60, so 73 is a lot warmer - both of you are paying for the apt/heat so both of you should be as comfortable as possible)

Not to be indelicate here, but do you weigh significantly more than your roommate?

I used to be significantly heavier in my younger days, and I remember well the battle over room temperature with roommates. The fact of the matter is, heavier people need the rooms almost uncomfortably cold compared to people with normal (or even abnormally low) BMI, who obviously need the rooms to be warmer.

Has your roommate been reading any books with "defenestration" in the title?

No, I weigh 150 lbs.
Maybe if it doesn't go over 68 degrees I wouldn't need to open my window. Guess I'll have to talk to him about not going over that. At least at night.
