Reason: more info
i have never heard of any internet service that doesnt require you to sign up for at least a year. why dont you get a wireless card and a router and just steal the internet.

that's a good idea about getting wireless and connecting through a public router. it isn't as safe as your own private network (which I use, need your own service for that though), but it's free. you shouldn't have trouble finding public connections in Manhattan, so that's no worry.
When I had Verizon DSL, they offered me a month-to-month plan if I paid a little bit higher each month versus signing a 1 year contract. You can see if they still have this and if it could work for you. I prefer DSL to cable, and only had a problem with the Verizon DSL once - turned out to be a problem with the building but they were prompt about coming out and getting it fixed.
i tried, but the unsecured network signals were all too weak to connect, even the public free ones. guess the apt is too high up (not on the first floor).
i'm technologically-challenged, so not sure how signal boosters work without a cable/line coming into apt. i hear that there are some that you just plug into an outlet, but do they need to be configured (oh boy...)? any help would be appreciated.
Hi - Time warner finally contacted me (they are slow at responding to customer inquiries!) regarding their internet service. They say for just high speed/road runner/earthlink internet service, there is no contract () at 29.95/mo total (said no taxes ) with a one time $25 equipment fee.
is the service reliable??
hey new yorkers, does this sound right??? everything seems expensive in manhattan, i guess i just find this hard to believe. thanks

That's usually their introductory price for the first 6 months or maybe it's a year. And I believe that's exactly what I got at first, and there was no contract. This sounds perfect for you as you don't need it for longer than 6 months. Just remember that the equipment MUST be returned, and if you don't return it, they will charge you much more than $25 (they will charge you something like $100).
I know because when I moved out of my last apartment I left the box there inadvertently, and did not go back via my landlady because I thought all i was forfeiting was $25 but it did turn out to be more than that. It's not a scam - just make sure you bring the equipment back when you move out.
I found them to be fairly reliable. I think it sounds fine.

I pay $97 a month for high speed internet and the step above basic cable tv. I get like 40 extra channels with the little extra I pay. This is in Queens.
My (very reliable) Verizon DSL service runs about $16/mo.
