Hi,

There is a luxury building (24 BR doorman/gym/lounge etc) on 3rd avenue between 100 and 101st street that I am highly interested in.

I've been to the building a few times once at night (though early, like 7 pm) and to be honest I never felt unsafe. I spoke to some tenants in the building and they all said they've never had any problems and feel safe.

The reviews I'm reading on here are so mixed and hard to evaluate because they wind up talking about 115th street or further north.

I have heard 96th street is very safe and my parents (who have never been to the area) agree on 96th but say 100 is too dangerous.... Which is mind boggling to me because it's 5 blocks. And this building is closer (actually right around the corner) from the police precinct.

I know there is a housing project up the block too and people say that makes it unsafe. Would think it also makes 96th unsafe though... And would think it's effect on 101st street is almost cancelled out by living essentially next to the police.

Anyone have experiences in this area? (Specifically staying below 103rd street and west of 2nd ave)

I'm a 29 year old female.

I wouldn't say it's a big safety issue. I take it you're likely white and not from NY based on your post. It's basically 2 seperate communities that have little interaction with one another. Most of the things you do will probably be south of 96th street (entertainment, eating out, shopping, etc) , and most of the residents of the projects will likely never cross over 96th Street. You will have to walk at least those six blocks to 96th Street though, just to get into the UES, so you have to weigh the cost of added walking time (groceery shopping, etc) versus the amount you are saving by not being in the heart of the UES>

Thank you, this is pretty much exactly what I tried to tell my mother who is freaking the f*ck out because she thought the building was at 96th and 3rd not 100 and 3rd. She is of course white living in the suburbs of LI)

I have lived in NYC for 6 years. But in FiDi which obviously my parents are fine with because its much safer than even 96th obviously.

(I know its screwed up that a 27 year old who has lived in the city for 6 years cares enough about her parent's opinion to even post this but I dunno... guess I have issues lol)

Sure the people from the housing projects cross South of 96th Street all the time. Who do you think works in the retailers like Whole Foods, Duane Reade, the restaurants, etc are?

You do have new buildings in Harlem on both sides they have been built and they are full of fairly affluent people. The demographics in the low 100s is rapidly changing. There are gut renovations and building tear downs (replaced by more expensive housing),

I'd say it's going to be safe for you. I wouldn't hang out in the nearby projects. Don't worry about it.

You checked it out yourself and you felt safe and the people you spoke to who actually lived there felt safe.

So that should be your answer.

5 blocks in NYC can make a huge difference, especially in Manhattan.

Writerdude, in every neighborhood across the city there are people coming in for low-level service jobs, such as cleaners, food service, and so on. I was talking more about her social life.

See my attachment, I doubt the OP, a 29 YO white female from FiDi, has any use whatsoever for Dreamer's Pizza, El Mundo, the bootleg wireless place, or the bodega next to the pizzeria. She just has to be willing to walk a bit to better, more upscale amenities. They may be slowly popping up, but I wouldn't call the area affluent just yet.

Let's assume she's looking at E 102 St since she has referred to the police precinct being on the corner. Thank you all! These were my thoughts exactly.

I know what you mean DoomDan as far as where you hang out. But if your just crossing over them to get to your building which has a 24/7 door man and is next to a police station...

All I kept thinking about was this bit by Louis CK:

"Most white people who live in New York their whole lives NEVER go to Harlem, they never even see it because they're certain AS SOON as you go to Harlem someone immediately murders you. Like its just an automatic thing, someone just stabs you in the face the second you cross 125th st"

And I'm no where near 125th lol

That guy's hilarious... regarding 125th though that's where central harlem begins... East Harlem or how it used to be Spanish Harlem starts on 96th and once you cross the 100's it's a significant difference. Haven't been there in a couple years so I'm sure much has changed but Spanish Harlem in the 100's is a lot shadier than west harlem in the 100's
