The minimum wage in where I'm from is $11/hr. It's shocking to hear that in an big expensive city like NYC it's a mere $7.25! That's horrifying.

According to the article her mother wasn't working and the woman was the only working person in the HOUSE.

So the mother, if she is poor or if her only income is social security, then she would be eligible for food stamps. The woman's rent was only $200 a month, so her mother was legally living with her she could not have have had a good pension or assets (this would be reportable when it's time to file taxes). Also if the mother had money the daughter wouldn't be struggling to the point where she never takes the bus.

In short her mother was most likely on food stamps, one can reasonably deduce.

Do you think the mother has her own shelf in the refrigerator where she keeps the food bought with her own food stamps? With a big DO NOT TOUCH sign on it to keep her grandkids from eating her stuff?

Terrible story, with or without food stamps and any type of welfare help. It's just an insane life to live.
It's even worse due to the fact that raising the hourly wages has multiple consequences (beside reducing the profitability) including increasing the cost of the products they sell.

The only time I saw a responsible action in that regard was in Germany, when they increased the VAT, I think in 2007.
That year the companies for retail products all collectively accepted to not raise the cost and cut their benefits instead - at least not more than what they would have done with the previous VAT rate.
From my point of view, it was impressive.

I wish US companies were ready to do such social work as well. In this case, there could be a light out. Otherwise it will simply be a vicious circle as all those wages are at that level for an economic reason so far.

The taxpayers are currently footing the bill to save big business from paying their fair share.

Paying workers a living wage would cut into CEO raises, bonuses, retreats, stock options ...

This will not be resolved any time soon.

I wondered why she had been disqualified from food stamps - perhaps the mother was as well.

Ethics of the substandard pay aside, I immediately wondered why the husband, mother, and brother are not working. The husband appears on the video, and one might assume that the other two are also able-bodied people given the she did not mention them being disabled.
