Students do it. It just isn't easy at all and most students won't these days.

Interships are really something you need to do now a days to get ahead. I recommend you take the internship and find an actual job besides that. Do you know your intern hours? You could find an evening job and a weekend job. I had to put myself through school working 50+ hours a week between 2 jobs while going to school full time. It's not easy but if you want something you will find a way to do it.

I'd look on Craigslist for rooms to rent in a neighborhood convienent to the internship.

That said, students who come to New York for internships find rooms in some of the residences (is there one near-ish Bloomingdales ?) that cater to young women. You would need to research it, and I would imagine do so in plenty of time.

You could find a share somewhere in Brooklyn perhaps. Depends how you define safe, and what you are wiling to do for professional aspirations. Young people do move into these less-than-desirable areas. Some of them put up with all sorts of things.

Those residences are NOT cheap by any means. They also do full checks on you (credit, references, etc)

The number of places like that have been dropping through the years but one of those residences still going strong is The Webster Apartments on 34th Street bet. 9th and 10th - www.websterapartments.org. I stayed in a similar place in Washington DC when I did a four-month fellowship many years ago and it worked out well and costs were well within what I was getting for the fellowship.

They usually include breakfast and dinner though, as well as all utilities (incl. wifi) which are not expenses to sneeze at.

Exactly the one I had in mind - I had forgotten the name.
I heard it is a great place.

haha so I will be honest. The only way you will find a place is to live like an immigrant. Immigrants stuff 4 people into 1 room and they all pay $300-$500 a month for 1/4 of a room. Otherwise there is no other option to live in NYC with that salary.

Do you have family in this area? If so, I'd stay with them. If not, I agree with the pps that you need to get a regular job. If you are a student, this may be hard. Try nannying, working in an upscale day care so you get a slightly higher going rate. Or try Starbucks or other retail. Then you can pay for a room in an apartment somewhere in East New York for something close to the 2 or 3 trains. Your stipend can go toward food expenses and a little transportation for the year while your job will pay the rent.
