I know someone who makes a similar commute, from Riverdale. Using the express bus, walking to the subway to get across the bridge, etc., takes about an hour during rush hour. So, from Dobbs Ferry, I would expect it to take you about an hour and twenty minutes or so, using Metro-North to 125th Street, 4/5 to 59th, and then the N/Q/R.

Why not take the Metro North to Grand Central and take the 7? Less subway and less subway switching.
This.

Well, think about it. There's a lot of Wall Street workers who take the 4/5/6 from Grand Central to Downtown. Taking the 7 train from Grand Central over to QBP is essentially the same thing.
Less switching going to Grand Central, but you have to factor the time to get to the station and then back to Queens Plaza. If you are timed close to a 4/5, it can be a couple of minutes faster to go to 59th, but that depends upon which station you need in Queens, too.

In this particular case, the OP said that the office is at 28th Street & Queens Plaza, which is directly between Queens Plaza & Queensboro Plaza. But even if the office was right at Queens Plaza, I'd still stick with the 7 personally, just because it's more frequent and more reliable than the (R). Factor in the extra transfer from the 4/5, and it's a no-brainer to take the 7.

I've done this route a couple of times to another destination in Queens that is close to the OP's requested location, and going to Grand Central adds about ten minutes to the trip at rush hour, as opposed to transferring at 125th, when you can get on any 4/5 to 59th. I've done it from Larchmont, after dropping off a vehicle for service, and tried both routes, and it is faster to disembark at 125th and take the subway, in my experience. It's not a regular commute for me, but I do know that the person I know who does this every day takes the express bus over Metro-North because it is faster not to go through Grand Central, though they are on a very early express bus, before traffic slows progress through Manhattan. Either way will work, but when one has experience with a route, it's perhaps best to discuss other opinions than to immediately assume that they know not of which they speak.
