Junkies did not live there in the 1980s or 1990s.

The junkies indicated by the racist comment lived in squats to the east. Although those were actually white anti-socials who got in with the wrong crowds rather than pursuing the dreams they came with.

And for anyone who is interested - this is increasingly the sort of person who now lives in the area:

I was in that area rather frequently. Even in the 90s second avenue was ghetto (not as bad as further east but pretty bad). It was full of junkies and other garbage people and yes they lived there. 2nd Avenue is a lot better these days, ditto first.

Apparently not quite frequently enough. I grew up there.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

If people do not know the difference ... yikes.
I get the point though.

BBMW, I'm wondering if it will turn out to be a plumber who's not quite as licensed as he should be. I feel like they should jail his whole family. I notice that I haven't heard any mention of the construction company, but I haven't been immersed in it.

The selfie is particularly disgusting, because it's using it as a "happy" occasion. But even people who just snap pictures - yuck, what for? I was on a corner a few blocks away and a knot of people were standing around staring up at the billowing smoke as if it were entertainment, snapping pictures with their cells.

By the way, I haven't seen any mention of the stores that were destroyed, either. Does anyone know? I was curious about B&H Dairy, which has been there for decades.

B & H - I heard they were open as usual.

The bodega that had been there forever is gone. Wonder what they will do.

In terms of the restaurants, we know Pommes Frites has every intention of eventually reopening. Anyone think Sushi Park or East Noodle will come back? Unfortunately I can't see it happening.

A plumber who is "not quite as licensed as he should be" is like someone being "almost pregnant"; either you are or you aren't, end of story.

Both the contractor and sub have been named in news reports. You just have to dig through the hundreds of media outlets we have these days.
