Hi, I am moving in a week and want to make sure my cat is safely out of the way of movers and everything. I am thinking the best way to do this is to find someplace that will take her for the day? Has anyone done this and can recommend a place? Does anyone have experience with pets and moving in NYC and how did you handle it? I don't know any of my neighbors in this building otherwise I would ask one of them to watch her. My best friend lives in the city but is allergic and I don't have any other friends that I feel close enough to ask such a favor of. Any advice? Thanks!

Maybe you could put a sign up in your building's laundry room to see if you could find someone to hire to do this. Otherwise, you could go to a business like Services There are probably a dozen other businesses offering the same thing if you Google "cat sitting nyc"

Or try the pet services board on Craigslist new york pet services: dog walking, sitting, boarding & training - craigslist

Thanks Henna,

I don't feel comfortable going through craigslist for this (I'm very much a cat lady and paranoid about her well being haha) which is why I was hoping to get some feedback on established businesses in the city. The link you provide looks good except I don't know if they will take cats. It says they can board dogs but for cats all I see is housesitting as an option.

Yelp seems to have some good info too but I was hoping to get some anecdotes specifically from people who used services during a move and figured this was a better venue for that.

I use Fetch Pet Sitting for my cat sitting. I think they do boarding too. They are located in Manhattan, but I am in Queens and they come out here for sitting.

Are far are you moving? Have you moved with your cat before? The last time we moved, we had learned from experience that the cats would head straight for a closet and stay there all day so we moved them over first, with all their stuff and left closet doors open for them. Sure enough, they went into the bedroom closet and didn't come out until long after the movers left. No problem and less traumatic then sending them somewhere strange without you.

Why can't you move everything out of one room (the bathroom, for example) so that the movers have no reason to go in there and leave the cat shut in that room all day? As long as she has a litter box and water she should be fine. That's much less traumatic and convenient than boarding your cat somewhere.

Happy Paws on Lafayette once boarded cats, do not know if they still do. It could be only dogs now.

I agree with the poster above, though, and we are also "cat friendly."

It's smart to want to keep her away from the action - they can disappear in the blink of an eye - but why not shut her in the bathroom ? Just be certain to tell everyone not to open the door or tape it to remind people. Leave her bed, toys, food, and so on in there with her, maybe a piece of your clothing.

When the movers leave, you can open the door and let her come out on her own.

Call some veterinary offices in the area you're moving to. They might sit or have recommendations of local people / businesses that do.

Alternatively just lock the cat in the bathroom with food and the litter box. That's what I do when I move with my cat.

I've heard of "waterboarding" but not "cat boarding".

Do you tie the perp to a table and let the cat walk all over their ribs with those boney little paws until they talk?

No. You sleep late, making sure that you did not leave out any food the night before.
