, I have noticed muslim Asians walking in around projects here by Mott Haven by 138th street. I also noticed east Asians walking out of projects in East Harlem as well along Lexington Avenue. NYCHA is almost majority black, but plenty of blacks in NYCHA lived their for generations and are still stuck in the hole. I don't think she should be concerned about Asians moving into NYCHA. Plenty of Asians are poor and earning next to nothing. She should be worried about her constituents and how to fix NYCHA in her district who badly needs money for repairs.
meh........on one hand it seems that shes implying that asians are getting preference in terms of getting housing within NYCHA and getting it quicker than black and latino applicants who have been on the list for years.....on the other hand......its nothing to be too concerned about. You goto London, Paris or Toronto, mutliethnic public housing is the norm in those places........if italians started moving back into NYCHA (they lived in those complexes when they first opened) and russians and albanians moved in it would be JUST LIKE those cities....
One thing is clear though.....with asians moving into NYCHA, bangladeshis moving into the Bronx and East NY Chinese moving into Spanish Harlem......gentrification is SQUEEZING the city......affordable housing is getting scarcer and scarcer.....with perhaps the exception of the LES Projects near chinatown it seems asians wouldnt even have nightmares about living in public housing 10-15 years ago.......and now theyre bunking up with blacks and hispanic people in those areas......gentrification continues to invade (or @ elast scout out) every afforable piece of NY thats left so the tradition of moving into a low rent area coming fresh off the plane from wherever and getting started in the US is quickly becoming one of the citys many dying traditions.....
Also think you are starting to see a more active Asian-American political and other presence as members of that community begin to stand up for *their* rights.
The Asian population is one of the fastest growing in NYC. They have taken over many parts of Queens (been to Main Street in Flushing lately?) and rightly or wrongly are demanding a seat at the table. To be fair every other immigrant group in NYC at one time or another did the same. Irish, Italians, Latino/Hispanics and yes even the Blacks.
IIRC the African-American population in NYC is declining whilst Asians and Latino/Hispanic is growing. If true at some point AAs are going to have to get used to the fact they aren't top dog of NYC's minority community any longer.
She has a point. Every group likes to have its own space, its own countries, its own land, its own neighborhoods.
Too bad should probably wouldn't recognize that its normal for whites or asians to have and want their own neighborhoods and areas to grow and prosper.
The fact that her issue is regarding public housing as opposed to market housing is hilarious. Why is she upset though since how can asians make the hood housing worse. It's the thugs who destroy neighborhoods and force non thugs to flee, not whites or asians.
