As a taxpayer I am ultimately for results. The results the Charter Schools are getting seem to be because of the standards they are setting.

Kids have to take tests in order to get into college, and maybe afterwards for professional certification, grad school, law school, medical school, etc.

So they are getting kids used to tests. Great! It's nice to see people set high expectations for these kids as opposed to making whatever sort of poverty pimp excuse.

If people pay attention to the "taxpayer" responses, they will gain an understanding of the current problems with education.

As an educator, I am entitled to an opinion there.
And wait until they do the expose on the cost and waste at a lot of the charters : like principals getting twice what DOE principals get paid to run schools that are less than 1/4 the size, daily deliveries from Fresh Direct and car service for teachers from subways stops to the schools so the poor teachers don't have to walk through the ghetto neighborhoods they teach in. Eva Moskowitz also pays herself more than double what Chancellor Farina gets paid.

The joke is going to come in about 10 years when everyone wakes up and realizes that the corporatization of schools costs twice as much and doesn't really net any better results. It will take a while for it to sink in though. It's just beginning now.

And given that WE know, as do other people, everyone will know soon enough. Value extraction as opposed to value creation, how could we be surprised that this would impact education. There is some interesting and scathing writing about this already.

And who pays ? The children.

This is the most ignorant statement I have encountered about education in a very long time.
Kind of post-ignorant. Something more aggressive.
Scary stuff.

Charter schools aren't going anywhere.

There's a problem with public education.

A chunk of the public is scum. If you want to increase your child's odds of success, you need to separate him/her from riff raff and put him in a competitive/high performing environment. Clearly some charter schools like Success have done that.

Public schools that produce low test takers and kids with poor grades condemn these kids to poverty. So if charter schools are able to help at least some kids escape poverty an extra cost is well worth it.

Charter schools have been around for awhile, and no one in politics has any issue with Eva Moskowitz making more money than Chancellor Farina. I'd say she deserves it if she is getting in good results. Pay is an excellent motivator.

Nothing - as I said, I am an educator and have gained a sense of the scope of the problem and the reasons for such.

One of the biggest comments, as you likely know - people who have no expertise "weighing in."
Whether administrators or the public, at meetings.

Being an educator doesn't mean you OWN the issue.

And both the public and the administrators care about the results.

Of course, if you look at the WORK the charter school teachers have to do and how they are held accountable for their results, of course that's hated by old school fans of public education.

Also old school fans of public education hate dealing with the competition for the better students (poor) and the resources (state taxes coming in). But NY is expanding it's charter schools because of the ones like Success which have worked well.
