First time renter, I'm caught up in what should I do for me and my significant other. We want a low rent, we found a sub-1000 1 bedroom (rent stabilized) in Stapleton...I Work in FR and she in the Upper East Side. Is it worth it to live in SI & save up? My credit is shot, I owe college debts in the mid 100 thousands...and still tacking on more debt...Any tips would be appreciated!
Thank you!

New York City is not for you. There is no non-regrettable way to get to commute to both of those locations without living in a place that costs way more

You don't know what the heck you are talking about.
Will give you Far Rockaway is going to be tough, especially by public transportation. However the UES is served by both Express Bus and the IRT subway line. Ferry-Walk to Bowling Green-IRT (express) transfer to local at Brooklyn Bridge/Union Square/Grand Central if needed.
Get an EZ pass and register your car in Staten Island so you get the 50% discount on the VZ toll ($8 instead of $16) and the commute by car won't be bad, take the bridge to the Belt Pkwy and then take that to the bridge to Far Rock. By public transit I recommend taking an express bus that goes to the west side into Manhattan and catching the A which runs up 8th Avenue, or if you only wanna pay standard fare instead of the express bus, take the ferry and then hop on the R at Whitehall Street, take it towards Brooklyn and transfer to the A at Jay Street, that would take about 75 minutes but you also have to figure the ferry is a half hour and you will spend 5 minutes waiting at each train platform. It will easily take over 2 hours.
I agree. Stapleton is a disgusting area with drugs and crime, that's why it's cheap. You can live in East New York for the same rent, same conditions/crime, and with 1/4 of the commute. Even if you wanted to live in the livable parts of the Island you can live in Howard Beach which feels like my neighborhood on the south shore (Eltingville/Great Kills 10308) and have the same experience with an easy one seat commute.

If you have so much debt why live in NYC? All your earned income goes towards expenses, how are you gonna pay your student loan debts down? The problem with NYC is that people can earn 6 figures but expenses bring you back down to earth real fast.
