That's a good area. That's prety much right at the heart of Maspeth.
And right down the block from Ivarone Bros and Rosa's Pizza (IMO the best of their locations), which is a plus. Can also jump on the highway in seconds.
Since you are so young you should get educated first and live with your parents if you still can. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter where you move because it's only a matter of time before you will eventually be priced out.

We are reasonably educated HS diplomas and I work in a factory in Red Hook/Park Slop area (under the Gowanus) so it costs me mad money to commute. How do you figure priced out?

You're thinking short-term. Everybody has a HS diploma. It's practically worthless. What are you going to do in 10 years, when you're still making the money you're making today (not much) and when cost of living increases? And don't forget about inflation...

Hopefully be a foreman? Once me and my girl get a little older we will probably move back to SI where it's cheaper to have children.
One day you'll remember my words (about getting educated). No sense in me arguing with you, as you've obviously made up your mind.
I don't want to argue with you. We all have different goals in life I guess. My dad did the college thing and is a CPA but most of the guys I know doing well are Union/cops/fireman there is more than one way to do well.

You need college credits to become a cop/firefighter. Also, I have family/friends in unions and a hugh part of the reason they make the money they make (100k+) is because they have college degrees, a bunch of certificates/licenses and a ton of work experience in their given field. Anyways, best of luck to ya.
Back to your original question. Try Forest Hills or Flushing.

At the risk of butting in, I gotta side with jkub101. Would it hurt to pursue at least an Associates from C/SUNY? You'll network/make friends with people who'll eventually do very well in law, finance, medicine, and IT. Hell you might even become one of them.
I don't know. All the "cool" areas are sewn up by rich people. Good luck finding somewhere to live around them.
