My parents raised me serbian orthodox but I'm personally fine with any christian church. I haven't gone to church in years, and never on my own. Since I'm in the city by myself now I figure it's a good time to begin.
I'd prefer to go to one along the 1 line if possible. How would I begin? Do I just walk in one Sunday during mass?
Plenty of churches on the west side. Just put on sunday best and show up a few minutes early. If you like it then keep attending and reach out and pay membership dues. Maybe after church talk to the priest and tell him you're interested in getting involved and he will help. Be aware that outside of the evangelical churches like Calvary Baptist on 57th street that do youth outreach it will probably skew older. The west village has a lot of gay churches too if that's your thing but if it's not avoid. God bless.
There is a Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St Sava 20 West 26th St. Between 5th and 6th, you can walk over from the #1 train. There is a Bulgarian Orthodox at 550 West 50th St. between 10th and 11th The services maybe more familiar to you at these churches since they are both Slavic Orthodox.
Thanks everyone I'll check those out. Plus I had no idea there was a St Sava church so close to me on 26th.
